The seven Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board schools in Ward 1: grades, programs and how to reach them.

Ward 1’s trustee represents seven Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board school communities, from elementary through secondary. As your trustee, I’ll visit these schools consistently, attend Ward 1 school council meetings at least once a quarter, and carry your ideas and concerns to the board table.

Elementary · French Immersion

Cootes Paradise Elementary School

An HWDSB elementary school on King Street West whose programs include French Immersion. It’s also one of Ward 1’s Election Day polling stations.

Grades 6 to 8

Dalewood Elementary School

Dalewood serves students in Grades 6 to 8, with a wide variety of clubs, teams and extracurriculars and a strong focus on relationships, equity and inclusion. It sits right next door to Dalewood Recreation Centre, Ward 1’s advance polling location.

Elementary · French Immersion & English

Earl Kitchener Elementary School

Founded in 1915, Earl Kitchener welcomes students in French Immersion, English and Special Education classrooms. Community involvement is a hallmark, from School Council and Home and School to community events, and its playground was redeveloped with the City of Hamilton into a community park. It’s also a Ward 1 Election Day polling station.

Glenwood School

Glenwood is an HWDSB system school for students with highly complex and intensive support needs, offering specialized programming, individual education plans and enriching activities that build connection, confidence and joy in learning. Students are referred through the board.

Elementary to Grade 8 · French Immersion & English

Kanétskare Elementary School

A dual-track school teaching French Immersion and English, and home to SAGE Quest, a program of choice. Kanétskare shares its building with the Kanétskare Recreation Centre, giving students access to the pool and park: a great example of a school and its community sharing space. Many students are new to Canada and receive English as a Second Language support, and a daily nutrition program reaches every classroom.

Strathcona Elementary School

An HWDSB elementary school at the heart of the Strathcona neighbourhood. It’s also one of Ward 1’s Election Day polling stations.

Secondary · Grades 9 to 12

Westdale Secondary School

Founded in 1931, Westdale is HWDSB’s first International Baccalaureate World School, offering the IB Diploma. It also offers French Immersion, a Music Strings program in Grades 9 to 12, enriched programming in Grades 9 and 10, and Specialist High Skills Majors in Construction and in Arts and Culture.
