What does a school trustee do?

On October 26, every Hamilton voter elects a mayor, a ward councillor and a school board trustee. Here’s what that last job is, in plain language.

What a school trustee does in Ontario: the short version

School trustees are elected to govern the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB), which runs Hamilton’s English public schools. Eleven trustees, each representing a ward or group of wards, work together to set the board’s budget and direction, hire and oversee the Director of Education, and bring their community’s concerns to the board table.

What trustees decide

  • The budget: how the board spends its money, from classroom and special education supports to school buildings.
  • The plan: the board’s multi-year strategic plan and the policies every school follows.
  • The leadership: hiring and evaluating the Director of Education, who runs the board day to day.
  • Schools and boundaries: decisions about school boundaries, programs and buildings, including whether schools are consolidated or closed.
  • Your voice: trustees are expected to consult with parents, students and the public, and to bring those concerns to the board.

What trustees don’t do

Trustees don’t run schools day to day; that’s the job of the Director of Education and board staff. They don’t hire individual teachers, and they don’t write the curriculum. The Province of Ontario sets what students learn.

Why your vote matters this year

Trustee races get far less attention than the races for mayor and council, but they decide how Hamilton’s public schools are run.

Ontario is rethinking how school boards are governed. That’s an opportunity: by electing trustees who work together, manage money responsibly and stay accountable, Hamilton can show what a strong local voice looks like.

Across Hamilton’s four school boards this year, more than a third of trustee seats were filled by acclamation, with no one running against the winner. Ward 1 is a contested race with no incumbent on the ballot, so you’ll be choosing a new trustee.

Which trustee race is on my ballot?

It depends on two things: your ward, and which school board you support (English public, English Catholic, French public or French Catholic). Unless you’ve registered as a Catholic or French-language school supporter, you’re an English public school supporter, and the HWDSB trustee race for your ward is on your ballot.
